Chapter 10

Career and Learning

In this chapter

Vocation

A career is less a choice and more a discovery. Consider what role you feel particularly well-equipped to perform, then acquire specialised knowledge in that field. A rewarding career or working life is rarely the result of discovering a pre-existing passion or overthinking a ‘perfect’ path. Instead, it is a dynamic process built on practical trial and error and the leveraging of your natural strengths. Rather than waiting for a spark of inspiration, clarity emerges from taking action, testing different roles, and learning from the inevitable missteps along the way.

True professional satisfaction often grows after the fact: as you focus on what you are naturally good at and build valuable skills, enthusiasm and confidence naturally follow. Ultimately, a career is not a puzzle to solve intellectually, but a journey shaped by doing, adapting, and leaning into your unique talents. A career is not so much a choice, but rather something that chooses you. Consequently, you should follow your talent, not your passion, as this is where your natural strengths lie.

Learn by Doing

Improvisation and a focus on time are key. The quickest way to succeed is to start now and figure things out as you go. You can’t learn to drive in a parked car. Embracing speed and adaptability drives remarkable progress because it guarantees immediate action. By moving fast and adapting in real time, you ensure progress instead of getting stuck in planning. Act. As you start to walk, the path will appear.

A Lifetime of Learning

Embrace learning every day of your life. Self-education is one of the truest forms of education because it continues long after formal schooling ends. Formal education is not a prerequisite for capability. Driven by passion, a self-taught person can develop deep expertise, demonstrating that intellect and talent exist independently of academic credentials. Never stop learning, or reading for that matter. Knowledge is acquired through reading, and it is how you master your chosen field. Words are knowledge, and knowledge is power.
