Chapter 30

Mastering Yourself

Before you can take control of your life, you must learn to control yourself. Your emotions, impulses, appetites, and desires are part of being human, but they must never be allowed to govern your decisions or actions. A man who cannot control himself is easily led by his feelings, tempted by immediate pleasures, and influenced by others.

Self-control is one of the foundations of personal freedom. If you act on every impulse, give in to every temptation, or allow anger to dictate your behaviour, you are not truly free. You are being controlled by your emotions and desires rather than exercising your own judgement.

Learn to pause before reacting. When somebody provokes you, do not give them the satisfaction of losing your temper. When you want something, consider whether having it is worth the consequences. When you are tempted to take the easy way out, remember what matters to you in the longer term. The ability to resist an immediate desire in favour of something more important is one of the greatest strengths a man can possess.

Above all, never underestimate how much damage a momentary loss of self-control can cause. A reckless act driven by anger, lust, or greed can destroy relationships, reputations, and achievements that have taken years to build. Master yourself, or your impulses will master you.
