Chapter 1
Be True to Yourself
Truth and Integrity
Being true to yourself is the bedrock of all other moral values. Be real. Be genuine. Be authentic. Be true. Speak the truth and act according to the truth. Be a man of your word. Anchor yourself to the truth and the facts. If you take one thing from reading this book, it is that there is nothing more important as a man than being true. True to your word. True to yourself. True to others. Never apologise for the person you are. Live your life according to a principle you hold above everything else and which you refuse to compromise.
One immutable principle governs all: truth is absolute. Lies are contrary to reality. Stick to the truth and you have the world on your side. Everybody sees the truth, but many people have a hard job accepting it. Accept it. Live your life with principle and integrity so that your actions match your words. Do the right thing. That is character.
Know Your Worth
Never underestimate your worth, strength, or ability. Always believe in yourself. You will have talents and potential that you may not yet recognise. Do not let anybody tell you that you cannot do anything. You have nothing to prove to anybody else, and you are not somebody else’s version of yourself. You are remarkable. Know who you are and what you want. Be comfortable in your own skin. Don’t say things you do not mean and don’t go along with things you do not believe in. One way to ensure that things pan out for you properly in life is not to lie. Stand behind your words and actions. Be strong. Be firm. Be a man of truth and principle.
If someone asks you to do something you do not want to do, decline. Never oblige or make an excuse. It is liberating to speak and live according to the truth. It is important to be assertive and not be pushed around by others. First, love yourself and know who you are and what you want. Then others will follow.
It is undeniable that some people, despite hearing and seeing the truth, still choose to believe a lie. Such individuals may remain silent when the truth is spoken, or even harbour resentment. Many people resist truths that disturb a comfortable illusion. A man who consistently speaks and lives truthfully will usually earn respect, even from those who disagree with him. Remember that despite people denying the truth, it always continues to exist.
Insincere, fake, or disingenuous individuals prioritise external perception over authentic character. Many people care more about appearances than authenticity; many would rather look happy than actually be happy. Genuinely authentic people simply do not give a damn. Do not force yourself to fit in where you do not belong. Always do the right thing, even when no one is looking; this is called integrity. Your life is shaped by the narrative you tell yourself about your experiences. Therefore, do not simply speak the truth: tell yourself the truth and live your life accordingly.
Always Be Yourself
Never try to impress people. Once you stop trying to impress, you become truly impressive. What matters most is not becoming a glorious or successful man, but becoming one who is true and genuine. Stop comparing yourself to others—your journey is unique. Do not crave friendship or become a people-pleaser merely to gain approval and popularity. Being true is the root from which everything else in your life grows. If the root is sound and genuine, the tree can grow and flourish; from a damaged or decayed root comes a lifeless, fruitless tree.
