Chapter 28
Fatherhood
The Responsibility of Fatherhood
For me, fatherhood has been the most important thing I have ever done. Children bring a depth of meaning and responsibility to life that is difficult to grasp until you become a parent. If you have children, never take that privilege lightly. Remember that not every successful man is a good father, but every good father is a successful man.
A Father’s Love
Being a good father means providing, protecting, guiding, and loving your children equally, completely, and unreservedly. Treat them fairly, while recognising that fairness does not always mean treating different children identically. Their mistakes, difficulties, or differences should never make them doubt that they are your children and that you love them. Fatherhood requires sacrifice—much of it quiet, repetitive, and unseen—but it can also imbue life with extraordinary meaning.
Providing and Being Present
While it is important to apply yourself diligently to your work, dedicate your utmost effort to being a good father. Work may provide for your family, but fatherhood fundamentally shapes the people your children become. Strive for excellence in both your profession and your role as a father. Work hard, but never allow work to be an excuse for failing to be present as a father.
Lead by Example
Children need more than financial provision; they require your time, attention, patience, boundaries, and example. They need to know that you are genuinely interested in the ordinary details of their lives, not merely present for significant occasions. Listen to them, teach them, laugh with them, and correct them when necessary. Apologise when you are wrong. Let them witness that strength and affection can coexist within the same man. Your children will learn as much from your consistent actions as from your words. Live the values you wish for them to inherit. Simultaneously, remember that your role is not to create copies of yourself. Provide them with roots, standards, and security, then grant them sufficient freedom to become their authentic selves.
Your Legacy
The greatest inheritance you will ever leave your children isn’t found in a bank account or written on a piece of property; your true legacy is the character, strength, and love you build within them. Long after you are gone, they will carry your voice in their conscience, your resilience in their hardships, and your kindness in how they treat the world. Wealth can be lost and monuments will crumble, but the integrity you model through your daily actions becomes a permanent blueprint for how they live their own lives. Lead them by example, guard their hearts with your presence, and remember that shaping a good human being is the most enduring mark you can leave on this earth. Crafting lasting moments and cherished memories with your kids is incredibly meaningful.
